Find out your lucky number and how you can win a copy of The Rise of the Dawnstar!

Welcome Farah! And congratulations on releasing The Rise of the Dawnstar! What drew you to write young adult fiction and use teenage protagonists?

Books with an element of fantasy and magic have always fascinated me and influenced the way I look at literature today.

I wanted my main character to be one whom young teenage girls could relate to, therefore the teenage protagonist. But at the same time I wanted her to be strong-willed, capable and someone whom they could look up to as well.

Aurora is in essence a modern teenager. She has lived her whole life in this world with modern technology, so she is more relatable to the readers. She only enters the fantasy world of Avalonia after she turns sixteen. Everything is seen through Aurora’s eyes and the reader explores the world and finds out more about it along with her.

One of the main concepts of the story is that Aurora could be anyone; that at any point of time it could be you who could open a cupboard, enter a library, or step into a tapestry and be transported to a magical world.

In essence this is a coming of age story, and revolves around a time in Aurora’s life when she has to learn to grow up and face life’s responsibilities on her own. She’s very naive in at first and she is brave and curious too, not always the best combination.

She ends up making mistakes and gets into trouble just like a regular teenager would. It is only in The Rise of the Dawnstar, book 2, that we get to see the change in her character. It is a gradual process, and takes time but she will eventually adapt to her situation and grow up in the process, becoming the warrior queen she was always destined to be.

Aurora Darlington is the 16-year-old-heroine of the Avalonia Chronicles series. If your story was one day turned into a movie, who would play Aurora?

I’m not really sure. I don’t think I have really thought about it that much. I do wish that my book could be turned into a movie someday, but I don’t think it will be anytime soon.

Who are your favourite YA authors?

Sarah J. Maas is my absolute favorite, can’t wait for book 6 of the Throne of Glass series, Tower of Dawn. My other favorites are J.K. Rowling, Tamora Pierce, Leigh Bardugo, Marissa Meyer, Cassandra Clare, Morgan Rhodes, Julie Kawagwa, Rae Carson, Richelle Mead and Pierce Brown.

You write YA fantasy as your main genre. Are there any other genres you would love to write?

At the moment I write YA fantasy, and I think I will continue to do that with certain variations. I’ve always wanted to write steampunk fantasy and fairytale retellings, so let’s see where that takes me next.J

The Rise of the Dawnstar is book 2 in The Avalonia Chronicles series. If you could compare your series to a movie or two, what tagline would you come up with?

Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings with a female protaganist.

What is the most challenging part of writing and the most rewarding?

I think the most challenging part is the editing; making sure everything is just right.

The most rewarding would be when fans express their love for my books. J

Many writers use music for inspiration while they write. Do you have any favourite music you like to listen to?

Not all the time. But there are times when I am writing a fight scene, I like to listen to The Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. It helps me imagine the scene better and gives emotion to the writing.

What are you writing next?

Book 3 in The Avalonia Chronicles.J

Exciting! Thanks so much for joining me, Farah. And huge success with your new book!

The Rise of the Dawnstar,
book two of The Avalonia Chronicles.

The Rise of the Dawnstar by Farah OomerbhoyAurora Firedrake returns in the spellbinding sequel to The Last of the Firedrakes.

The seven kingdoms of Avalonia are crumbling and evil is spreading across the land like a plague. Queen Morgana is close to finding a way to open The Book of Abraxas and it’s only a matter of time until she uses the power trapped inside its pages to enslave the entire world.

With Avalonia growing more dangerous by the day, Aurora must travel through war-torn lands and deep into the heart of the fae kingdom of Elfi. Her goal is to find a legendary weapon infused with the last of the realm’s ancient magic—the only weapon in the world powerful enough to stop the queen.

Aurora might have survived her first battle against Morgana, but the true fight to save her kingdom and restore her throne has only just begun…
